What happened in the prologue – chapter 5?:
We’re introduced to Sydney in the future, who’s just woken up in someone’s bed he definitely should not have gotten into. From the glimpse we get, they were wasted last night, passed out, and now her siblings and boyfriend are knocking on the door. Sydney sneaks out the back, before realizing he left his keys.
Catching us up on the story, we meet Sydney nearly a year earlier as he’s on his way home from work and get a little of his backstory and how he fits into this world. He’s good friends with Lynn, who’s married to a friend of Romero’s. He used to be in love with her, and thinks he always will, but she’s married now with a beautiful family and he’s over it. He’s just learned from Lynn that a good friend of theirs, Mando, passed away, so he’s planning to drive from LA to La Jolla for the services when it happens.
When Sydney arrives back at his apartment building, he gets in the elevator with an attractive young girl who farts. Loudly. Mortified, she runs off the elevator as soon as she can. Amused, Sydney assumes that’s the last he’ll see of Elevator Girl.
But fate brings them back together when she walks into Romero’s backyard at the service a week later. They recognize each other, and after she greets a few people, she walks up to him and tries to explain – the fart was actually a ringtone rigged by her brother.
Sydney learns that Elevator Girl is Emilia, the sister of Liv, Isaiah, Nathan, and A.J. and Lynn is actually Sarah, Angel’s wife, but Sydney has just always called her by her middle name, Lynn.
Sydney and Emi hit it off, and though Sydney was determined to stay away from her, she inserts herself in his life and they become fast friends over the next few months.
