Chapter 4 of Death under a Full Moon
Everyone paused as a low moan was heard from the corner of the room.
“Okay, who’s pretending to be a ghost?” Dara joked.
“I’m not pretending to be anything. I think I’m in labor,” Maddie said before moaning again.
The party hosts and guests sprang into action. Wade and Lizzie helped Maddie out of her chair and toward the door. Drew hurried outside to start the car with the rest of the men right behind. The women followed Maddie with her belongings and told her repeatedly to breathe.
Drew ran around to the passenger side of the car. He was shaking nervously as he held the door open with one hand and called Doctor Hughes with his cell phone in the other. Wade and Lizzie walked Maddie to the car. When she was safely in, Drew slammed the door and ran to the driver’s side. Tires screeched and dust flew as he stomped on the accelerator.
The remainder of the guests were smiling and laughing when they heard it. A loud scream pierced the stillness of the night. It was the kind of scream that caused a primal response. Chills ran down their spines; the hair on the back of their necks stood on end.
“That’s what I heard earlier,” Paul said to Wade. “I told you.”
“Yes, you did,” Wade replied obviously concerned.
“That’s what I heard out by the barn, too,” Nick added.
“What on earth is that?” Emily asked.
“It can’t be good, whatever it is,” Dara said as she moved closer to Kent.
Wade stood listening for a few minutes.
“What is it Wade?” Lizzie asked.
“I’m not sure, but I agree with Dara. It can’t be good. I think it’s time for us to leave. I have some phone calls to make. ”
