Outlander meets post-Civil War unrest

in this fast-paced historical debut.

When Dr. Catherine Bennett is wrongfully accused of murder, she knows her fate likely lies with a noose unless she can disappear. Fleeing with a bounty on her head, she escapes with her maid to the uncharted territories of Colorado to build a new life with a new name. Although the story of the murderess in New York is common gossip, Catherine's false identity serves her well as she fills in as a temporary army doctor. But in a land unknown, so large and yet so small, a female doctor can only hide for so long.

When I met Catherine Bennett on page one, I just knew we were going to be friends.  Her spunk, her sass and her ability to take a bad situation and try make it work for her was admirable.

A female doctor in the 1800’s was not very common, so when she was accused of murder by a patient and was unprotected by a man, she is forced to flee New York and begin a new life.

Her journey was not easy and filled with obstacles that would have stopped a lesser woman. But Catherine was determined to make it and make it as a doctor, especially since so much had already been taken from her.

I loved the slow romance between Laura (Catherine)  and Captain Kindle.  This book was not heavy on the romance and I am a romance girl but I feel it was just the right amount of a love story for this book.

Sawbones is fast-paced and filled with action, along with some very graphic and gruesome scenes.  We have all studied American History and her storytelling is spot on with the politics and practices of the time.

If you are looking for a book that is well- written, has a gripping story-line, seasoned with mystery, suspense, a little romance then you have come to the right place my friend!

Gripped from the first to the last page, Sawbones is a raw, gritty tale that takes us back to a time, when rules didn’t apply, when heartbreak was a way of life and tomorrow was a gift. Weaving facts and fiction Melissa Lenhardt gives us a story so rich in detail and horrific in truths, you finish the book with so many questions, so many emotions and ready for more.

hearts4*TRIGGER WARNING* This book contains scenes of graphic rape, torture, & Genocide, which were very common in the time period it is written about.
